Lab 11 Renal Physiology Flashcards
Kidneys function
- Inorganic ion and water balance in blood
- Removal of nitrogenous waste from blood
- Removal of xenobiotics from blood
- Gluconeogenesis
- Secretion of hormones
Nephron
Is the functional unit of the kidney
Afferent arterioles
Brings blood to the kidney but only some blood gets filtered in to the kidneys
Efferent arteriole
Blood that doesn’t get filtered goes through this
Bowmans capsule
Proximal convoluted Descending loop of henle Ascending loop of henle Distal convoluted Collecting dust Renal pelvis of kidney
Aldosterone
is made by the kidney and stimulates the collecting dust to absorb sodium back into the bloodstream when sodium levels are low in the blood
Vasopressin
Is secreted by the pituitary gland and stimulates the collecting dust to ribs are water when the water levels are low in the blood
Aquaporins
Are the protein channels/tube through which the water leaves the collecting dust in order to re-absorb back into the bloodstream
Urinary Tract
Kidneys
Ureters
Bladder
Urethra
