Lab Flashcards
What bacteria grows in a wide range of T, pHs and salt concentration and produce heat-stable enterotoxin
Staphylococcus aureus
Baird-Parker agar: when used, what it tests for
This media is developed from the tellurite-glycine formulation and improved
its reliability in isolating Staphylococcus aureus from foods.
Baird-Parker has added sodium pyruvate, to protect damaged cells and aid their recovery and egg yolk emulsion as a diagnostic agent.
It is now widely recommended by national and international bodies for the isolation of Staphylococcus aureus.
Nutrient Agar: why used?
A basic culture medium used to culture organisms for maintenance purposes or to check the purity of subcultures from isolation plates prior to biochemical or serological tests.
This media is suitable for teaching and demonstration purposes. The medium, without any additions, may be used for the cultivation of organisms which are not specific in their nutritional requirements.
Sabouraud dextrose agar: why used
An acidic pH medium for the isolation of dermatophytes, fungi, and yeasts. This modification of Sabouraud agar is suitable for the cultivation and differentiation of fungi.
How Gram staining is performed, and what each color means
Gram-negative bacteria appear pink to red and Gram-positive bacteria appear purple in detail.
