Lab 10 Flashcards
What is an osteon?
the basic structural unit of compact bone
What is a lamella?
layer of matrix in compact bone, lacunae and osteocytes found in between
What is a lacuna
small cavity which holds an osteocyte
What is canaliculi?
tiny canals that connect lacunae to each other, allow nutrients to reach osteocytes
What is the central canal?
extends through center of osteon, holds artery, vein, and nerve
Perforating canal
connects central canals of adjacent osteons, runs perpendicular to central canal
What is spongy bone?
also called cancellous bone, lattice-like appearance, holds red bone marrow
osteoclast
giant bone cell, 50 or more nuclei
osteoblast
convert to osteocytes when surrounded by matrix
trabeculae
plates of bone, has lamellae with embedded osteocytes, no osteons
what is articular cartilage made of?
hyaline cartilage
What is a bone that develops as a small island within sutures/joints between cranial bones?
sutural or Wormian bones
bones formed in tendons due to stress
sesamoid bones
what is the axial skeleton?
along vertical midline, supports head, neck, vertebra, and thorax
appendicular skeleton
upper and lower limbs
