parts of flight
forehead / frontal region
top of the beak to an invisible line between each eye
crown / crest (in crested birds)
region posterior of the forehead extending to the beginning of the cervical vertebrae (neck)
pileum
entire top of the head, includes forehead, crown, and occipital region
lore
area of the head posterior to the bill and anterior to the nasal canthus of the eye (tear duct area). bald in some birds, colorful in others
supercilium
a contrasting stripe of feathers immediately above the eye in some birds
eye ring
2-4 tiny bands of feathers surrounding the eye, often a contrasting color
eyeline
a line extending posteriorly from the eye toward the nape of the neck
narial feathers
long feathers at the base of the upper bill (maxilla), partially covering the nostrils, only present in some groups (ex. crows)
rictal bristles
bristle-like feathers around the corners of the mouth, present in many songbirds, absent in pigeons, act like cats whiskers in nocturnal birds
auricular feathers
a wide patch ventral and posterior to the eye and covering the ear opening, in the cheek area
malar region (mustache feathers)
a patch posterior and ventral from the mandibular ramus, between the auricular feathers, the cheek and the throat feathers, sometimes boldly colored
commissure
corner of the mouth, where the maxilla and mandible meet
nape
the dorsal surface of the neck from the occipital ridge of the skull or first cervical vertebrae at the base of the neck
upper mandible / maxilla
top jaw, top bill
lower mandible
lower jaw, lower bill
