Lab 1 Flashcards
Why is red blood cell easy to identify
Because of its red color which comes from the iron in hemoglobin (2) the have nick cave shape that allows them to squeeze into small capillaries
What do you think biconcave mean
It means that it has greater surface area for gas exchange on RBC and helps maintain osmotic stress
How many white bloods cells are there?
There are five white blood cells
Name the white blood cell
Neutrophil, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocyte and monocytes
What is granulocytes
Are white blood cells that have protein filled granules in their cytoplasm that are visible when stained
How many granulocyte are there
There are three granulocyte
Name the three type of granulocytes
Neutrophils- are about twice the size of red blood cells and have nuclei with many lobes. They are most numerous type of white blood cell in a healthy individual 2) eosinophils - are about the same size as neutrophil. Their granule Stan orange/pink because they take up the red stain eosin. They have bi lobed nuclei. (3). Basophils - are smaller than the other two their granules take up a very dark blue basic stain
What do bi lobed mean
It means that the nuclei is divided into two lobes
A granulocyte- means without a granulocyte do not have visible granules when stained the cytoplasm of these cell appears clear blue
Do not have visible granules
How many a granulocytes are they name them
There are two a granulocytes (1)- Lymphocytes (2) - monocytes
Describe lymphocytes
Are about the same size as basophils but lymphocytes can be distinguished from basophils because it’s nucleus takes up nearly the whole cytoplasm-of the cell leaving a clear blue halo of cytoplasm around it.
Describe monocytes
Are the largest of the wbc they have kidney shape nuclei and clear cytoplasm
How can you distinguish lymphocytes from basophils
Lymphocytes nucleus takes up nearly the entire cytoplasm of the cell leaving only a small clear blue halo of the cytoplasm
Where do platelets come from
Extremely large cells called megakaryocutes
How do platelets appear
Like dark purple/blue dots that are much smaller than red blood cell
A patient blood tests indicate anemia what test value would be outside the normal range
32 - 36g/dL
Name two test that might indicate kidney damage.
Creating and blood urea nitrogen (bun)
What test would indicate possible diabetes
Glucose test
What would be the range be for prediabetes
101 - 126mg/dL
People with emphysema ( breathing condition) would have high level of which blood gas
Carbon dioxide
Hi why would low sodium level be a problem
Low sodium level may result in the lack of iron that is needed for nerve conduction and muscle contraction
Malaria is cause by a parasite that affect the red blood cells individual with atypical red blood cells may be harder for the parasite to infect which condition might help protect against malaria?
Siskle cell
Calcium levels are part of a BMP give three physiological process that require calcium
Muscle contraction, nerve impulses, and cells for movement
What color would you expect for a negative Benedict’s test for glucose
Blue
Birder reagent tests for the present of which organic molecule?
Protein
A sample of plasma turns cloudy with the addition of AgNO3 what does that result mean
It means that the silver ion in AgNO3 react with chlorine ion in the solution to form insoluble AgCl (s)
How can you tell a neutrophil from basophils
Neutrophil have multi- lobe nucleus and Basophils - has cells with big , super dark purple- blue granules
How can you distinguish between a lymphocytes and a monocytes
Monocytes are slightly larger than lymphocytes
What color should an eosinophils stain with eosin
Pink/orange
Which blood cell would give you information about the average size of a red blood cell
MVC - mean corpuscular volume
Red blood cell deliver
Oxygen to our tissue and pick up carbon dioxide and bring it back to the lungs
Platelets are involve in
Blood clotting from liquid to solid
What type of feed back is blood clotting
Positive feed back
What does Benedict reagent test for
Glucose
What does biuret agent test for
Protein
What color is biuret if protein is present
Blue
Are all lymphocytes leukocytes
Yes
Are all leukocytes lymphocytes
No
AgNO3 + NaCl —-
AgCl(s) + NaNo3 Looks white (positive) means salt is present
What are the components of formed elements
Red blood cell, white blood cell and plates
What is another name for platelets
Thrombocytes
What is another name for red blood cell
Erythrocytes
What is another name for white blood cells
Leukocytes
White blood cell is divided into how many categories
Two
Name the two categories
Granulocyte and agranulocytosis
How many blood cells are in granulocytes
Three
Name the granulocytes
Neutrophil, eosinophils and basophils
What percentage is neutrophil
70%
Which cell make up the majority of the immune systems
Neutrophil
Which cell (granulocytes) is bi- lobed
Eosinophils
