Lab 1 Flashcards
Tonicity
The ability of a solution to change the shape (tone) of cells by altering the cells’ internal water volume
Homeostasis
Maintenance of stable internal conditions
ex: temperature regulation
Gradient
A gradient is a difference in concentration of a substance in one area relative to another
Matter & energy, when free to move
travel down/along their concentration gradients
Exchanged across surfaces
are matter and energy
Diffusion
The tendency of molecules (or
ions) to move down their
concentration gradient until
equilibrium is reached
Osmosis
The diffusion of a solvent, such
as water, through a selectively
permeable membrane until
equilibrium is reached
Isotonic Solutions
Cells retain their normal size and shape in isotonic solutions (same solute/water concentration as inside cells: water moves in and out at same rate)
Hypertonic Solution
Cells lose water by osmosis and shrink ( contains a higher concentration of solutes than are present inside the cells)
Hypotonic Solutions
Cells take on water by osmosis until they become bloated and burst (lyse) (contains a lower concentration of solutes than are present inside cells)
Frontal Section
separates front and back
Transverse Section
separates top and bottom
Median section (midsagittal)
separates right and left
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body: on the outer side
Medial
toward or at the midline of the body: on the inner side
