Lab 1 Flashcards
what are analgesics
analgesics are drugs used to relieve pain
What are some analgesics
Acetylsylic acid, Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, codeine, and morphine
What are antipyretics
drugs used to prevent or reduce fevers
What is TLC
thin layer chromatography, a process that separates the intimate mixture of compounds and identifies the featured compounds
How does chromatography work
it exploits the differing polarity of compounds and differing affinity of compounds for solids. It causes each different compound to travel. different distance over a stationary phase
What does Rf =
distance the sport travelled / distance the solvent traveled
What is Rf
the retention factor, a ratio, different for each compound
How is TLC different than other chromatography
It exploits the dynamic interactions of compounds with a solid (stationary phase) and a solvent mixture (mobile phase)
What does TLC often use for the stationary phase
Silica gel - fine particles of SiO2 on a plate of thin plastic
How does TLC Work,
the mixture of compounds is spotted onto the bottom end of the plate and absorbed onto the stationary phase. This end of the plate is set into a solvent, which slowly moves up by capillary action, pulling the compounds up a different distance
What determines how far something moves in TLC
the higher the affinity for the stationary phase a compound has, the more time it spends in the stationary phase and the less it travels
How does gravity filtration work
A solvent is pulled through filter paper, place on a filter, over an Erlenmeyer flask to separate a solute from solvent
When is gravity filtration used over vacuum filtration
when they are really fine solids or solutions involving a lower boiling-point solvent
