Lab 1 Flashcards
Repro and Evo-Devo
gonad
an organ that produces gametes; a testis or ovary
gamete
a mature haploid male or female germ cell which is able to unite with another of the opposite sex in sexual reproduction
zygote
a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum
cloaca
a common cavity at the end of the digestive tract for the release of both excretory and genital products in vertebrates and certain invertebrates
anus
the opening at the end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste matter leaves the body
germ cell
any cell that gives rise to the gametes of an organism that reproduces sexually. Infundibulum - a funnel shaped cavity or structure
oocyte
a cell in an ovary which may undergo meiotic division to form an ovum
follicle cell
cells that surround the oocyte within the follicle
ectoderm
the outermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, or the parts derived from this, which include the epidermis and nerve tissue
mesoderm
the middle layer of an embryo in early development, between the endoderm and ectoderm
endoderm
the innermost layer of cells or tissue of an embryo in early development, or the parts derived from this, which include the lining of the gut and associated structures
homologous
similar in position, structure, and evolutionary origin but not necessarily in function
competence
the ability to respond to a specific inductive signal
neural crest
a collection of multipotent or pluripotent stem cells located at the side of the neural tube proximal to rhe epidermal layer after neuraltion
