Toward the Front or Belly
Ventral “The aorta is VENTRAL to the vertebral column”
Toward the back or spine
DORSAL “ the vertebral column is DORSAL to the aorta”
toward the ventral side
Anterior “the sternum is anterior to the heart”
Toward the dorsal side
POSTERIOR “ the esophagus is posterior to the trachea”
toward the head or superior end
Cephalic “The brain develops from the cephalic end of the neural tube”
Toward the forehead or nose
ROSTRAL “The forebrain is rostral to the brainstem”
Toward the tail or inferior end
Caudal “the spinal cord is caudal to the brain”
Above
Superior “ the heart is superior to the diaphragm”
Below
INFERIOR “the liver is inferior to the diaphragm”
Toward the median plane
MEDIAL “the heart is medial to the lungs”
Away from the medial plane
LATERAL “the eyes are lateral to the nose”
Closer to the point of attachment or origin
PROXIMAL “the elbow is proximal to the wrist”
Farther from the point of attachment or origin
DISTAL “the fingernails are at the distal ends of the fingers”
On the same side of the body (right or left)
IPSILATERAL “the liver is ipsilateral to the appendix”
On opposite sides of the body (right or left)
Contralateral “the spleen is contralateral to the liver”
Closer to the body surface
SUPERFICIAL “the skin is superficial to the muscles”
Farther from the body surface
DEEP “the bones are deep to the muscles”
