Toward the Front or Belly
Ventral “The aorta is VENTRAL to the vertebral column”
Toward the back or spine
DORSAL “ the vertebral column is DORSAL to the aorta”

Anterior “the sternum is anterior to the heart”

POSTERIOR “ the esophagus is posterior to the trachea”

Cephalic “The brain develops from the cephalic end of the neural tube”

PROXIMAL “the elbow is proximal to the wrist”
Farther from the point of attachment or origin
DISTAL “the fingernails are at the distal ends of the fingers”
On the same side of the body (right or left)
IPSILATERAL “the liver is ipsilateral to the appendix”
On opposite sides of the body (right or left)
Contralateral “the spleen is contralateral to the liver”
Closer to the body surface
SUPERFICIAL “the skin is superficial to the muscles”

DEEP “the bones are deep to the muscles”
