Cardiologist - heart + blood vessels
Dermatologist - skin, acne, moles
Geriatric medicine specialists - the elderly.
Neurologists - brain, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s
Obstetrician/gynecologist - pregnancy/women’s health
Oncologist - cancer
Pediatrician - children
Where are GPs based?
local health centers, clinics, or private practices.
What are the roles of a GP?
- First person you call when ill (primary point of contact)
- Provide ongoing medical care for people in community.
- Care for people when ill + perform simple medical procedures.
- Provide preventative care + health education.
- Refer to specialist consultants in serious cases.
What are the responsibilities of a GP?
- Diagnose illnesses + discuss/agree treatment plan.
- Prescribe appropriate medication/treatment + monitor progression.
What are the roles of a consultant doctor?
- Provide consultation and manage complex cases.
- Leading multi-disciplinary care teams.
What are the responsibilities of a consultant doctor?
- Teaching/training junior doctors.
- Contribute to their specialty field through research and leadership.
- Diagnosing + treating more complex cases.
Where are midwives based?
Maternity units - increased number in the community (clinics, GPs, homes, children’s center’s).
What are the roles of a midwife?
- Supporting women through all stages of pregnancy - providing antenatal and postnatal care.
- Identifying high-risk pregnancies.
- Prepare women for birth during labor, pregnancy, and after birth.
What are the responsibilities of a midwife?
- Provide antenatal care (clinical examinations + screening).
- Monitor women during labor + the birthing process.
- Teach new/expectant mothers how to feed, care for, and bathe their baby.
Where are healthcare assistants based?
Hospitals, doctors surgeries, and the community.
What are the roles of a healthcare assitant?
- Support practice nursing teams in delivery of nursing services (multi-disciplinary working).
- Deliver + assist clinical staff in provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, and patient education.
What are the responsibilities of healthcare assistants?
- Taking + recording pulse, temperature, blood pressure, BMI.
- Making beds - mobilizing SU from bed.
- Washing + dressing - preserving dignity by using screens around beds.
- Serving meals and assisting with feeding if necessary.
Where are social workers based?
- Schools, hospitals, clinics, private practices, prisons.
What are the roles of a social worker (general)?
- To work with people to find solutions to their problems - protecting vulnerable people from harm/abuse or supporting them to live independently.
