Subjective Point of View
A personal view or opinion; can be argued against
Example: Ohio State is the best football team.
Objective Point of View
States only facts; cannot be argued against.
Example: Ohio became a state on March 1, 1803.
First Person Point of View
One of the story’s characters narrates using pronouns I, me, and my
Example: I fell asleep in all of my classes today.
Second Person Point of View
The narrator tells the story using pronouns you, your, and yours
Example: You need to read your book during silent reading time.
Third Person Limited Point of View
An outside narrator tells the story; knows thoughts and feelings of ONE character
Example: He was sad that his dog ran away.
Third Person Omniscient Point of View
An outside narrator tells the story; knows thoughts and feelings of MULTIPLE characters
Example: He was sad that his dog ran away. His friend was also sad that his dog ran away.
Multiple Perspectives
Characters alternate between chapters (can be used in first or third person)
Example: The novel Seedfolks-each chapter is from the perspective of a different character
Genre
Definition: a major category or type of literature
Expository
Intended to explain or describe something
Ex: News
Irony
The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning
Example: A fire truck catching on fire.
