What is exposition?
The beginning of the story. Sets the tone, establishes the setting, introduces the characters, and gives the reader background info.
What is rising action?
The part of the plot in which the drama intensifies, rising toward the climax.
What is the climax?
The plot’s most dramatic and revealing moment, usually the turning point in the story.
What is the falling action?
The part of the plot after the climax when the drama subsides.
What is the resolution?
The conclusion of the story. The point in the plot at which the conflict comes to an end. Most questions raised throughout the story are answered.
What is foreshadow?
A warning or indication of a future event
What is a flashback?
Interruptions in a story where the writer inserts past events in order to provide background or context to the current events of the narrative.
What is internal conflict?
Man v. Himself. A conflict within the character (jealousy, insanity, fear, hatred).
What is external conflict?
Man v. man; man v. nature; man v. society. Characters pitted against an outside force like: natural elements, societal obstacles, one person, or other characters.
What is first-person narration?
Identifiable by the use of the pronoun “I.” A first-person narrator may be a major character and often its protagonist.
What is third-person omniscient narration?
All-knowing perspective that allows the narrator to know the thoughts and feelings of any character.
What is third-person objective?
Gives only observable details and does not have access to the internal thoughts of characters or background information about the setting or situation.
What is third-person limited?
Knows what is in the minds of only a select few characters
What is mood?
The general atmosphere created by the author’s words
What is imagery?
Writing technique an author uses to create mental images and sensory appeal for the reader. Detail which appeal to ANY of the five senses.
What is a topic sentence?
An opinionated statements that tells us what the paragraph is about
What is a concrete detail?
A fact; something that actually happened or will happen
What is commentary?
An explanation of or a comment/opinion about your concrete detail.
What is a conclusion?
A wrap-up or restatement of your topic sentence. NO new information here!
