What is Alliteration?
Repeating the same sound; descriptive words.
What is Allusion?
Reference to something; indirect or passing reference.
What is an Analogy?
Comparing two things to explain something.
What is an Antagonist?
The opposing force; not always a bad guy.
What is an Antecedent?
A thing or event that existed before or logically precedes another
- Like antecedent action in a story
Example: I hate my Russian doll. She is so full of herself.
What is an Archetype?
An idea, symbol, pattern, or character-type in a story; symbolizes something universal in the human experience.
- For example, every story has a “sage”, who is basically a wise mentor that helps the main character
What is an Aside?
A short speech from a character that is spoken directly to the audience.
- It’s kind of like that mumbling we see in Romeo and Juliet; they speak to the audience as “mumbling” rather than speaking to the rest of the stage members
What is Characterization?
Qualities of a character that come from the story, either through event, dialogue, or clearly stated by the author.
What is a Cliche?
A phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought.
- For example: Think outside of the box
What is Climax?
The big turning point of a story; often where the main conflict is solved.
What is Colloquial?
An informal, commonplace language specific to a demographic or time period.
Informal language in a certain place
- Example: Soccer in America and football in the UK.
- It’s also slang, like y’all, gonna, etc.
What is Compare/Contrast?
Comparing is finding similarities and contrasting is finding differences.
What is Conflict?
The main problem.
What is Context?
Background information or circumstances you provide to inform why something is taking place.
What is a Couplet?
A two-line poem with the same meter and rhymes.
What is Denouement?
The ending.
What is Dialogue?
Speech; what the characters are saying.
What is Diction?
Certain words the author chooses to get their point across.
What is Direct/Indirect Presentation?
How they describe a character.
Direct: author directly tells you
Indirect: through speech, events, etc.
What is Discourse?
The use of language to share ideas, insights, and information.
A speech or piece of writing about a particular, usually serious, subject
- Example: giving a discourse on something is to explain thoroughly about a certain thing
What is Drama?
Genre or style of writing; a play.
What is Dynamic?
Characters that change throughout the story.
What is an Epilogue?
Comes after the main story has ended.
What is a Euphemism?
A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt.
- Saying someone “passed away” instead of saying they died
