L9- Situational Explanations Of Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
How many people disobeyed in Asch and Milgrams study?
Asch- 25%
Milgram- 35%
What is the social support theory?
Situational explanation of resistance to social influence.
—> Argues that when one person refuses to conform, it is more likely that other people will also refuse to conform and obey
Another name for someone who believes the same as an individual
Ally
Why does the presence of an ally increase resistance to social influence
Because this breaks unanimity, people think there are other legitimate ways to answer, giving them an independent assessment of reality and makes them feel more confident and able to stand up
Why are people more likely to disobey an authority figure if they see another disobiedient authority figure?
Because the person rejects the instructions of an authority figure- challeng8ng their legitimate authority
Evaluation - Milgram
Milgram managed to lower the obedience from 65% to 10% by getting a another confederate (experimenter) to argue with the original experimenter
Evaluation - Asch (positive)
The experiment originally had a conformity rate of 33%, however once one conferderate broke unanimity, conformity rates dropped to 5% (ally)
Evaluation - negative
This theory supports how a a participant resisted social influence with the help of an ally or disobedient role model, however it does not explain how a participant was able to resist despite not having social support
