L8-Periodontics 1 Flashcards
What are the three aspects of the Attachment Apparatus of teeth? What structure is responsible for these 3 aspects in development?
The Dental Follicle gives rise to…
- Cementum
- Periodontal ligament
- Alveolar bone
Interdental Papilla?
Masticatory mucosa rising in triangular fashion b/t teeth.
Gingival Margin?
Free Gingiva. Incisal or occlusal most Ridge of masticatory mucosa. Separates Oral Epithelium and Sulcular Epithelium (Tooth side of gingival margin).
What are the 3 aspects of Gingival Epithelium?
- Oral epithelium
- Sulcular epithelium
- Junctional Epithelium
What are the two types of mucosa? Describe each briefly. What is the border separating them?
- Alveolar mucosa. Generally more red, Moves, where blood vessels visible. Towards apical end of tooth.
- Masticatory Mucosa (Gingiva). Thicker, doesn’t move, protective. May be stippled like an orange peel. Highly variable b/t individuals.
Border = MUCOGINGIVAL Junction (MGJ)
-Border so named b/c masticatory mucosa also named gingiva.
Where is the mucogingival border absent?
Palate b/c just masticatory mucosa like.
Marginal Groove?
Separates Free gingiva and attached gingiva on oral epithelium side.
To test the depth of what sulcus do you use a perio probe? What does it mean if this sulcus is too deep?
Gingival sulcus. If gingival sulcus is too deep it means that the attached gingiva may be receding and that the cementum (root) of tooth may be exposed.
What epithelial layer lines the gingival sulcus?
Sulcalar epithelium
If a perio probe finds that the gingival sulcus is too deep what epithelium has pulled away from the tooth?
The Junctional Epithelium.
Alveolar crest? How deep is it apical to DEJ?
Lingual tip of alveolar bone. Generally 2mm apical to DEJ.
In health gingival margin and alveolar crest exhibit contours corresponding to what junction?
CEJ. Bone starts receding so does gum.
What are the two big differences between Gingiva (masticatory mucosa) and alveolar mucosa?
- -Gingiva has keratinized oral epithelium
-Alveolar Mucosa is NOT keratinized - -Gingiva is fixed in place
-Alveolar Mucosa has high density of elastic
fibers which allow for movement.
What type of epithelium is present in oral epithelium? What are the borders of oral epithelium (Is there an exception)?
Oral epithelium is made up of Keratinizing, stratified, squamous cells.
Extends from Gingival Margin to MGJ. Except for palate, where no MGJ so extends from Gingival Margin to Palatal Epithelium.
What are Squames cells?
They are nuclei remnants on the keratinized surface of oral epithelium. They flake off frequently and are swallowed. Way to rid oral cavity of attached bacteria.
