Cross-docking requires close coordination between inbound and outbound
Putaway
Act of placing merchandise in storage
Activities involved:
-Transporting and placement of merchandise
-Registering actual storage location
WMS
Warehouse Management System can direct putaway operations to place each pallet or case.
Batched putaway
Designated warehouse locations that are grouped according to :
Product/Suppliers/Customers
Interleaving
Combine putaway and order picking whenever possible to prevent empty travel because they can be on the same route sometimes
Aisle space vs Storage space
Tradeoff
More space for aisles = lower material handling time and cost –> High inventory turnover
More space for storage = Higher space utilization (lower storage cost) –> Low turnover
