Support Groups

Educational Groups

Growth Groups
Help members replace maladaptive behaviors, deal with personal problems, or recover from trauma.
Therapy Groups
Facilitate transitions through developmental stages by improving interpersonal relations.
Socialization Groups
Provides a way for individuals to come together to share knowledge and expertise.
Communities
Chiefly provides social services directly related to the mission of the organization.
Primary Settings
Promote social justice, advocate for policy changes
Government
Made up of businesses and organizations that are not owned or owned by the government.
Private Sector
Rather addressing specific social issues or needs.
Voluntary Sector
Major employer of social work practitioners; usually focus on specific clientele groups.
NGOs
Provide social work services as adjuncts to the goals of the organization.
Host Settings
Work hand-in-hand with medical professionals
Healthcare Settings
Address issues that block academic progress
School Settings
Evidence givers and report writers; provide testimonies in court hearings.
Court Settings
Task Group: Focused on the discussion of a particular task
Treatment Group: Open; members are encouraged to actively interact
Communication
Task Group: May be assigned depending on the task at hand
Treatment Group: Evolve as a result of interaction
Roles
Task Group: There are usually formal agendas and rules
Treatment Group: Flexible or formal depending on the group
Procedures
Task Group: Low
Treatment Group: High
Self-disclosure
Task Group: Proceedings may be private or open to the public.
Treatment Group: Proceedings are kept within the group.
Confidentiality
Task Group: Success of the group is based on members’ success in accomplishing a task or mandate or producing a product
Treatment Group: Success of the group is based on members’ success in meeting treatment goals
