How can a research question have social consequences?
May be damaging by adding scientific credibility to discrimination for example and damaging members of a certain group
How does methodology have social consequences?
Right to confidentiality and anonymity must be considered
May be instances where there are doubts about keeping confidentiality
What should researchers think about if the research is funded privately
Why they’re funding it and how they’re going to use the findings
How does institutional contest have consequences?
Researcher needs to be careful of who’s funding the research and how they intend to use it
How does interpretation and application have social consequences?
Findings may be used for purposes other than its original intention, so must consider how they’ll be interpreted and applied
Positive evaluation point related to otherwise only having unimportant issues to study?
Avoiding socially sensitive research completely will only leave unimportant issues and means avoiding responsibility
Psychologists have a duty
Negative evaluation point related to exclusion and misinterpretation
Understanding of human behaviour has been lessened bc of them
These groups, e.g. women, miss out on benefits of research and suffered consequences
Negative evaluation point related to impact on a group
SSR has higher potential to have an indirect impact on the group a participant represents
Can’t just safeguard the participant
