L7 - Climate System Response Flashcards
1
Q
Firn
A
crystallised snow, commonly on the upper part of a glacier, which has not yet been compressed into ice
2
Q
Why are glaciers on a shallow slope more sensitive than on a steep slope?
A
- slow due to less gravity influence (ice in ablation zone cannot be quickly replaced)
- lower elevation gradient (all exposed to same conditions)
3
Q
Advection
A
Horizontal movement of water with a different temperature than the surroundings. Driver: Ocean currents.
4
Q
Convection
A
Vertical movement of water. It is the rising or sinking of fluid with a different temperature (density) than the surrounding material. Driver: density differences (temperature, salinity)
5
Q
Diffusion
A
The flow of energy/matter from high to low concentration (at molecular level). Very slow.
6
Q
How can NL adapt to SLR?
A
Redesign and build delta works to reduce flood risk
