2
Q

Why are glaciers on a shallow slope more sensitive than on a steep slope?

A
  • slow due to less gravity influence (ice in ablation zone cannot be quickly replaced)
  • lower elevation gradient (all exposed to same conditions)

Advection

A

Horizontal movement of water with a different temperature than the surroundings. Driver: Ocean currents.

Q

Convection

A

Vertical movement of water. It is the rising or sinking of fluid with a different temperature (density) than the surrounding material. Driver: density differences (temperature, salinity)

Diffusion

A

The flow of energy/matter from high to low concentration (at molecular level). Very slow.
