L6 - Intro to Design Thinking Flashcards
Principles of DT, using DT in practice
key principles of design thinking (5)
- user-focused practices
- collaboration + participation
- focusing on human needs
- embracing uncertainty + experimentation
- prototyping + iteration
define design thinking
human-centred approach to innovation that emphasises understanding user needs and rapidly prototyping solutions to address said needs
user-focused practices
centres around understanding and empathising with people –> prototyping solutions to address said needs
prototyping and iteration
instead of initially aiming for perfect solution, ITERATIVE PROTOTYPING is encouraged
–> creating tangible representations of ideas, testing them with users, gathering feedback + refining design based on learnings
–> iterative process means continuous improvement + final solution aligns well with user needs
embracing uncertainty and experimentation
DT views uncertainty as chance for exploration and learning
–> encourages experimentation
–> an iterative approach makes experimentation easier as potential problems and mitigated by repeated iteration –> leads to course correction early on
collab and participation
emphasises involving stakeholders in design process + fosters shared understanding of user needs + encourages diverse perspectives
focus on human needs
creates solutions meaningful to people’s lives
–> DT not limited to specific industries, and applicable everywhere
design thinking processes (5)
empathise –> define –> ideate –> prototype –> test
what is an empathy map?
chart that explains everything designers have learned about users
considers what user:
1. says
2. thinks
3. does
4. feels
