L6 basal ganglia Flashcards
3 psychological functions of Basal ganglia
decision making
social behaviour
emotion
what does the Striatum consist of
caudate nucleus
putamen
lentiform nucleus consist of
putamen and globus pallidus
two parts of globus pallidus
internus and externus
what are basal ganglia
network of subcortical nuclei composed of grey matter
3 motor functions of basal ganglia
indirect output to motor neurons
receives input from entire cerebral cortex
filters out incorrect inappropriate responses
by regulating direct/indirect pathways the BG are vital in:
- starting/stopping specific movements and behaviours
2. prevention of antagonistic/unwanted movement
define Parkinson’s disease
neurodegenerative disorder of the CNS, affecting the dopamine releasing neurons of the substantia nigra
bradykinesia (2)
- slowness and poverty of movement
- festinating - gradual reduction in speed and amplitude of repetitive actions -freeze episode
- lack of automatic responses e.g. saving reactions low
rigidity
increased muscle activity causing resistance to passive movement (entire rom )
present in antagonistic pairs of muscle groups
resting tremor
alternating contraction of antagonistic pairs
common in upper limbs
increase with anxiety
communication with P.d.
slow quiet voice
limited non-verbal communication (gestures)+fascial
swallow with p.d.
reduced swallow control
reduced food organisation
drooling
name the cues utilised for p.d. patients
auditory cue
visual cue
kinaesthetic cue
cognitive cue
