L6/7: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Light Absorption + Calvin Cycle. 2 results = 1) energy for metabolisms & 2) produce carbohydrates (sucrose)
Photosynthesis-Irradiance
Positive correlation between light intensity and photosynthetic rate, but efficiency decreases gradually
Diffusion
Movement of carbon from high concentration (outside leaf) to photosynthetic tissues (chloroplasts - inside leaf)
Stomata
Pores which regulate gas diffusion
Transpiration Rate
Flux of water escaping from leaf. Measured using Fick’s Law. Diffusion through layers of leaf (regulated by stomata)
Stomatal Resistence + Conductance
Rate of passage of c02 entering, or water vapor exiting through the stomata. Influences turgor pressure and osmotic potential of guard cells.
c02 fixation
Part of Calvin Cycle. Rubp binds to Rubisco + 1 carbon, reduction (using ADP + NADP). final product=glucose
Photorespiration
Oxygen (rather than carbon) reacts with Rubp during fixation process. Results in unstable acid. Inefficiency.
