L5&6 - Respiratory System Flashcards
what does the nasal cavity consist of?
ciliated mucous membrane/epithelium
air is filtered, warmed and moistened by…?
filtered by hairs
warmed by contact with mucous surface
moistened by evaporation of moisture from surface
name the three curved shelves of bone in the lateral wall of the nasal cavity?
- superior concha - ethmoid bone
- middle concha - ethmoid bone
- inferior concha - separate bone
conchae divide nasal cavity into 4 air channels
what is the space under concha called?
meatus
name the four paranasal sinuses
- ethmoidal
- sphenoidal (not palpable)
- maxillary
- frontal
where does the nose receive openings from?
- 4 pairs of paranasal sinuses
- naso-lacrimal duct
give 2 features of nasopharynx
- adenoids on roof
- opening of eustachian tube
what can enlarged adenoids cause?
- blocks posterior nasal opening (mouth breathing/snoring)
- blocks auditory tubes (middle ear infection-otitis media)
describe the walls of the larynx
ciliated mucous epithelium
name 4 types of cartilage in the larynx
- 1 thyroid cartilage
- 1 cricoid cartilage
- 2 arytenoid cartilage
- 1 epiglottis
what protects the vocal cords?
vestibular folds
what is the space between vocal chords?
rima glottidis
what is the trachea?
c-shaped rings of cartilage + fibrous tissue + smooth muscle
mucous membrane and cillia
what is the carina?
ridge that marks the division of trachea into two bronchi
which bronchus is wider and more vertical?
right primary bronchus
how many lobes does the right primary bronchus have?
3 - superior, middle and inferior
how many lobes does the left primary bronchus have?
2 - superior and inferior
what are bronchioles made of and what does it do?
cartilage - holds tube system open
smooth muscle - control tube diameter
name two terminal bronchioles
- respiratory bronchioles (few alveoli)
- alveolar sacs (more alveoli)
do terminal bronchioles have cilia?
no cilia - debris removed by macrophages
how does gas get from alveoli to circulation?
thin layer of fluid lining alveoli -> alveolar epithelium -> thin interstitial space -> capillary endothelium
what is the function of the two alveoli cell types?
type 1 - gas exchange
type 2 - secrete surfactant
what are the muscles of inspiration?
muscle fibres - radial
peripherally - lower margin of rib cage, upper pumbar vertebrae (crura)
central tendon - flat aponeurosis
nerve supply - phrenic nerve
what accessory muscles are used in deep inspiration?
pectoralis major and minor
sternocleidomastoid
