Q

What is small scale water management?

A

An intermediate technology solution to any water related problem, this usually costs a significantly smaller amount than a large scale management project.

Q

What is large scale water management?

A

A solution to water related dilemmas via the use of advanced technology, this usually costs a large amount of money and takes a long time to develop.

Q

What is overland flow?

A

Overland flow is the movement of water over the land, down slope toward a surface water body. Overland flow is a very important aspect of the water cycle and can be generated under two different physical mechanisms.

Q

What is groundwater flow?

A

In hydro geology, groundwater flow is defined as the “…part of stream flow that has infiltrated the ground, and has been discharged into a stream channel, via springs or seepage water”. It is governed by the groundwater flow equation.

Q

What negative functions does the Abingdon reservoir have?

A

Potential loss of farmland
More likely to flood
Disease and mosquitoes ( especially in poorer countries)
Methane accumulates as a result of rotting vegetation.

Q

Can river pollution be regulated?

A
Yes it can, here are some solutions:
Narrowing of a river
More efficient removal of increasing rubbish
Built riverside roads and walkways
Covered huge pipes carrying sewage.

Q

What is the Water cycle?

A

the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.

16
Q

What is the long term effect of climate change on water supplies

A

A warmer climate will melt icebergs, this will cause water levels to rise and specifically near the UK as we are not far from the antartic or the North pole.

17
Q

What is the short term effect of climate change on water supplies

A

Wouldn’t be a server impact, it would be seasonal and perhaps impact agriculture occasionally.

18
Q

Methods of Large scale water management?

A

Dams, Reservoirs

19
Q

Disadvantages of large scale water management

A

Are expensive to build and maintain
People can lose homes.
Can be potential risk for flooding.

20
Q

Advantages of large scale water management

A

Are organised and created by the government
Covers large areas
Highly effective.
