L4: Sedimentary Classification Flashcards

1
Q

Clastic rocks

A

Clastic rocks are composed of fragments, or clasts, of pre-existing minerals and rock. A clast is a fragment of geological detritus, chunks and smaller grains of rock broken off other rocks by physical weathering.

A

measure of smoothness or angularity of sediments; whether they have been eroded smooth or are still jagged

14
Q

Sphericity

A

Shape or Elongation- the ratio between the surface area of a sediment and that of a sphere of the same volumne. How close the grain is to spherical

16
Q

Clast and Matrix support

A

Clast - Rock fragments are in contact with one another and form a framework supporting one another
Matrix - Rocks not in contact and floating within a finer grain sediment

17
Q

Slate

A

Mudrock that splits easily along cleavage not bedding

18
Q

Shale

A

Oil industry/ US term - Mudrocks, usually those that split along bedding planes

A

sedimentary rock composed of but a single mineral species.
