L4- Great Barrier Reef Flashcards
What are the two global strategies for protecting the Great Barrier Reef?
1) CITES
2) RAMSAR Wetlands
What is the main aim of CITES?
- Lists all endangered species
- Aim- stop trade in products such as elephant ivory or handbags made from crocodile skins
- But is quite hard to manage so many conflicts but is a legal framework
What are the 3 pillars for the RAMSAR wetlands?
1) Identify important erlangst and manage them
2) Wise use of wetlands- fishing/farming - needs to be sustainable
3) Co-operate with other counties if across a border
How many counties protected the 196 million hectares of wetland habitat for RAMSAR wetlands ?
163 countries
What are the three main factors/pillars to consider for a sustainable outcome?
- Environment - protects against degradation
- Economy - reducing poverty and helping locals make a living
- Social - improve local facilities that benefit the whole community
Why is it difficult to get a sustainable outcome?
- Dual Pressures
- Climate Change -can make vulnerable sites more worse
- Stakeholders will conflict - environmental sustainability been reintroducing wolves and bears into America
When was CITES signed and by how many countries was it adopted by?
-Signed in 1973 and adopted by 166 countries
What Should be protected in Great Barrier Reef?
- hotspots
- location in poorer areas
- high profile species
- keystone species
How many individual reefs are in the Great Barrier Reef?
-2900 individual reefs
Give some examples of threatened species
- Dugongs
- Salt water crocodiles
- Six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles
-Humpback whale, Minke whale, Killer whale,
What is the worlds largest world heritage area?
-Marine Park
How does the Marine Park work?
- ensures all human uses of the park are sustainable
- maintain ecosystem’s natural functions
- presenting the phenomenal wonder and natural values to the world .
What does Bonn convection do?
-Conserve terrestrial, marine and migratory bird species
What are the main threats to the Great Barrier Reef?
- Tourism
- Crown of thorn starfish
-Highly destructive cyclones
-Rise in the frequency and extent of coral bleaching caused by increasing peak summer temperatures
What are dugongs hunted for?
- meat , oil, skin, bones
- medicine and decoration in Kenya
- Oil- aphrodisiacs &good luck charm in Indonesia
- Any get hit by ships and get tangled in fish nets
