L4- Correlations Flashcards
1
Q
What is correlations
A
A technique used for analysing the strength of the relationship between two quantitative variables known as co variables
2
Q
Types of correlations
A
- positive - one increases, so does other
- negative- one increases, other decreases
- No correlation- no relationship
3
Q
What is the correlation coefficient
A
The strength of the correlation
4
Q
Advantages of correlations
A
- allows to establish strength between two variables
- allows researches to investigate things that could not be manipulated experimentally for ethical or practical reasons
- correlations can help conduct predictions on one variable based on what is known about the other
5
Q
Disadvantages of correlations
A
- cannot demonstrates cause and effect
- don’t know if variables are related or if there is a third unknown variable
- correlations only measure linear relationships not curvilinear
6
Q
curvilinear relationship
A
- relationship between two variables where as one variable increases, so does the other variable, but only up to a certain point, after which, as one variable continues to increase, the other decreases.
