L39: Oral Mucosa Flashcards
Name the 3 types of oral mucosa.
- Lining;
- Masticatory;
- Gustatory.
Which oral mucosae are keratinised?
- Masticatory is parakeratinised;
- Gustatory is keratinised.
What type of oral mucosa is lining mucosa?
Non-keratinised
Where is lining mucosa found?
- Buccal (cheeks);
- Labial (inside lining of lips);
- Alveolar (between buccal and labial).
What type of oral mucosa is masticatory mucosa?
Para-keratinised
Where is masticatory mucosa found?
- Hard palate;
- Attached gingiva
What type of oral mucosa is gustatory mucosa?
Keratinised
Where is gustatory mucosa found?
Dorsum (front) of the tongue only
Explain the structure of oral mucosa.
- ! Epithelium (stratified squamous);
- ! Lamina propria;
- Submucosa.
Explain the structure of epithelium.
- Stratum corneum;
- Stratum granulosum;
- Stratum spinosum (prickle-cell layer);
- Stratum germinativum (basal layer).
C-G-S-G
In keratinised epithelium, where is keratin produced?
Stratum granulosum
What is the difference between keratinised and non-keratinised cells?
Keratinised cells have no nucleus or organelles, i.e. dead cells, filled with keratin protein
What type of cells produce keratin?
Keratinocytes
What are melanocytes?
Pigment (melanin) producing cells
What are langerhans cells?
Dendritic, antigen presenting cells, of the mucosa/ skin
