L3 - MultiStore Model Of Memory Flashcards
1
Q
What is the multi store model of memory?
A
- developed by Atkinson and Shriffrin
- explains how information flows from one memory store to another
2
Q
What is the SR according to the MMM
A
- Environmental stimuli received through the senses enters the SR
- Retains unprocessed impressions of information
- Capacity is unlimited but the duration is 250 milliseconds
- Only a little bit of the info from the SR is attended to and is selected for further processing in STM
- If not attended it is lost
3
Q
What is the STM according to the MMM
A
- Acoustically coded from SR
- Temporary store for information from SR before going to LTM
- Information can be recalled and forgotten before transferred to LTM
- STM has limited capacity (7+-2) so can be displaced
- STM has short duration (18-30secs)
- Without rehearsal, info decays fast
- With maintenance/elaborative rehearsal, the info can be transferred to LTM for more permanent storage
4
Q
What is the LTM according to the MMM
A
- Semantically coded into LTM
- Permanent store
- capacity is infinite/ a lifetime
- when info is needed, it is retrieved to STM before being recalled
- when we cannot access info, it is retrieval failure and we need retrieval cues for access
