L3 - Multi Store Model Flashcards
What is the MSM?
It outlines the memory process in a simple diagrammatical way
Describe how the MSM looks?
Environmental stimuli -> sensory memory -> STM -> LTM
What is the sensory memory (SM)?
Information held by the senses
It is where we passively receive sensory information
Without attention this information decays from our memory
With attention it will transfer acoustically to the STM
What is STM?
If STM have elaborative rehearsal they can be transferred to the LTM where it can last a lifetime
How do the STM + LTM differ?
In different locations in the brain
STM - in the PFC (prefrontal cortex)
LTM - hippocampus
What did Glanzer + cunitz do?
Did research where memory performance indicated separate stores, and locations of memory
Explain the role of rehearsal
Maintenance rehearsal can enable memories to go from the SM to the STM
Elaborate rehearsal can enable memories to go from the STM to the LTM
