L3: Importance of Variation Flashcards

1
Q

What is variation?

A

When different organisms compete for the same resources (food, water, shelter eg.) in an ecosystem. It limits population size.

Q

Why does competition limit population size?

A

Because it provides survival pressures, making it more difficult to survive and reproduce

Q

What does the term ‘survival of the fittest’ mean?

A

The ones better adapted to the habitat (the fittest) will have a higher chance of surviving and reproducing. This is also called natural selection.

Q

Why is variation important?

A

Because it allows a species to become bettwer adapted to their habitat - whether it be through a new mutation or if the environment changes
