L3: Importance of Variation Flashcards
What is variation?
When different organisms compete for the same resources (food, water, shelter eg.) in an ecosystem. It limits population size.
Why does competition limit population size?
Because it provides survival pressures, making it more difficult to survive and reproduce
What does the term ‘survival of the fittest’ mean?
The ones better adapted to the habitat (the fittest) will have a higher chance of surviving and reproducing. This is also called natural selection.
What does extinction mean?
When a species is outcompeted and does not reproduce
What is variation?
The differences between members of a population
Why is variation important?
Because it allows a species to become bettwer adapted to their habitat - whether it be through a new mutation or if the environment changes
What is speciation?
The formation of a new species due to evolution of two reproductively seperated populations.
What can cause speciation?
Geographical isolation
