L3: Definition Of Abnormality- Statistical Infrequency Flashcards
What is statistical infrequency
This definition suggests that someone who possesses a characteristic which is statistically rare or uncommon could be classes as abnormal. For example, having a very high IQ score. When looking at IQ scores, the average score is 100. Anything below 70 is classed as abnormal, and anything above 130 is too. This are statistically infrequent.
Evaluation(+) - intelligence
Having an IQ over 130 is just as infrequent as having an IQ below 70, therefore a high IQ and being very smart is often quite desirable. Just because a behaviour is statistically infrequent does not mean a person is abnormal and needs treatment, it can be a good thing.
Evaluation(+) - objective
Another advantage is that this judgement is based on objective, scientific and unbiased data which can test if someone needs treatment accurately.
Evaluation(-) - self-esteem
Labelling someone as abnormal due to their rare IQ score of below 70 could be seen as negative and viewed this way by other members of society which could lower an individuals self-esteem and have a negative effect on themselves and lead to further problems.
Evaluation(-) - Subjective cut-off point
The cut-off point between abnormal and normal can be questioned as someone with an IQ of 70 is abnormal, but someone with an IQ of 71 is normal. This is very subjective
