L3 Biology definitions Flashcards
Tropic response
A directional growth response in plants to a stimuli
Nastic response
A reversible, non-directional movement response of a plant to a stimuli
Hierarchy
An organisation of individuals in a group according to rank/dominance. It is often determined by age, sex, or genetic fitness
Homing
The ability to return to a given place across unfamiliar territory
Taxis
A directional movement response in animals in response to a stimulus
Migration
Migration is the annual or seasonal mass movement of animals to or from a breeding ground, to an area with better conditions.
Parasitism
An intraspecific relationship where the organism being lived on or in (the host) is harmed while the organims living on or in (the parasite) benefits
Interspecific competition
Competition between two organisms of differing species
Territory
An area, and all the resources and opportunities contained within it, that is maintained and defended by an individual or a group.
Circannual rhythm
An endogenous biological rhythm with a period of activity of around 365 days
Circilunar rhythm
An endogenous biological rhythm with a period of activity of around 30 days
Circadian rhythm
An endogenous biological rhythm with a period of activity of around 24 hours
Monogamy
Staying with one breeding partner usually for more than one season
Kinesis
An orientation response of an animal, responding to the intensity of a stimulus by altering the rate of random movement or turning
Sexual dimorphrism
Individuals of the other sex display differing characteristics except for those directly relating so sex organs
