L22 Flashcards
Describe the term lymph
Lymph: A coagulable fluid Similar to plasma Contains WBC + lipids(chyle) Only used once interstitial fluid enters the lymphatic vessels
What is the general role of the lymphatic system?
Drains fluid from tissue spaces preventing oedema
Absorbs/transport of FA from SI.
Body’s defence mechanism
Difference between lymphatic capillaries and lacteals?
Lymphatic capillaries and lacteals are the same, however, lacteals are found in the SI and carry lipids aswell as lymph AKA chyle.
What do lymphatic capillaries join to form? talk about the structure of this
Lymphatic afferent vessels:
Transport lymph towards lymphatic nodes
Contain veins for backflow
3 layers walls, tunica adventitia (connective tissue), tunica media (smooth muscle), Endothelium (single cell layer).
How does lymph move from tissue spaces and within the lymphatic system itself?
Filtration pressures in tissue spaces
Contraction of neighbouring skeletal muscle
Respiratory movements
Contraction of lymphatic vessels
Where do the upper lymph nodes drain to?
Subclavian trunk
What percentage of drainage from the breast goes to axillary and how much to parasternal?
axillary: 75%
Parasternal: 25%
What area does the right lymphatic duct and left lymphatic duct drain?
Right lymphatic duct drains the top quarter right of the body.
The left lymphatic duct drains the remaining 3/4 of the body.
Where is the spleen located?
LEFT HYPOCONDRIUM region of abdomen
