L21 - Lipid Metabolism 1 Flashcards
What are TAGs composed of?
A glycerol linked to 3 FAs
What does lipolysis do?
It releases the FAs so they can be used for B-oxidation
Apart from FAs what does lipolysis produce?
The other product of lipolysis = glycerol. This can be converted to DHAP and:
i) used for energy production by glycolysis or
ii) used as a substrate for gluconeogenesis
What 2 enzymes are used to break down lipids?
- DAG lipase
- TAG lipase
Describe the steps of how a TAG gets to a FA
TAG ——> DAG (via TAG lipase)
DAG ——> MAG (via DAG lipase)
MAG + H20 ——> FA (via MAG lipase)
Where does B-oxidation take place in eukaryotes and prokaryotes?
E: In the mitochondria - it is only done aerobically
P: cytoplasm
What carrier is used to carry the Fatty Acyl CoA?
Carnitine
Describe how FAs are activated in the cytoplasm
