L2 - The Enviroment Flashcards
Name the 6 main physical factors that can effect an organism
Radiation, temperature, moisture, salinity, current flow, soil structure
Describe what endotherms and ectotherms are
Endotherm - produce their own body heat to regulate their temperature, therefore perform consistently.
Ectotherm - reply on external heat sources for heat (sun, other animals)
Give a disadvantage for being both an endotherm or an Ectotherm
Endotherm - large energy expenditure therefore a large amount of fuel is needed
Ectotherm - extreme temperatures are fatal, and anything other than optimum temperature slows their performance
Where are plants with the highest photosynthesis levels usually found?
In areas that don’t have any other limiting factors (such as nutrients, water)
In terms of current flow, what happens to an animal if the speed is above the animals maximum movement speed?
The animal is moved unintentionally
Name the 3 biotic factors that effect animals?
Prey/recourses, competition, ecological niche
What are the 3 main things competition can influence?
Survival, growth, reproduction
What occurs if 2 species niches overlap?
Interspecific competition
