L2 Reflection Refraction of Light At Plane Surfaces Flashcards
refractive index relationship for mirror surface
n’ = -n
follows sign convention rule. incident ray travels from left to right (+1), reflected ray travels from right to left (-1)
define real space
Space left of interface (infront of mirror)
Object/image within is real
Define virtual space
Space right of interface (behind mirror )
Object/image within is virtual
explain vergence and state its unit
-the distance between an object/image and the LENS
-reciprocal of the radius of the wavefront
OR
-refractive index of medium divided by distance (in m, take note if negative or positive depending on type of vergence)
How to describe object and image
- position: Infront or behind surface or at infinity
- orientation: upright or inverted
- attitude: real or virtual
- size: same, large or small
- real and inverted go together
- upright and virtual go together
explain refraction in parallel-sided surfaces and its assumption
the emergent angle will be the same as the incident angle in a parallel glass box if
parallel-sided glass block surrounded by same medium
Define apparent position
When the object appears above the actual object
Define apparent thickness
apparent depth of a parallel-sided plate VIEWED NORMAL TO ITS SURFACE
What is the relationship between actual and apparent position of an object
N/depth = N'/depth' OR n(water)/depth = n(air)/depth’
