ex) pt is a convict
ethical dilemma
there’s two morally correct courses of actions but both can’t be followed at the same time
ex) pt is refusing therapy they need to recover, pt has right to autonomy but you want to use beneficience for best interest of patient
ethical distress
you know the right thing to do but are somehow blocked from doing it
ethical temptation
recognizing temptation that could convince you to act against professional code
ex) dating a patient
moral silence
not speaking up when you should to report unethical behavior
Tests for right and wrong
legal test: is it legal?
PU: does it smell wrong?
Front page: How would it look on the front page
Mom/Dad: How would parents feel?
Professional ethics: what does code say?
types of justice
distributive: equal dist to all
compensatory: act to make up for past injustice
procedural: follows an order
teleological
decision made with outcome in mind, doing something that may or may not be morally right to get the most favorable outcome
