sleep apnea is as common as what?
diabeties or asthma
what happens in upper airway resistance syndrome?
exaggerated breathing effort and snoring created by high resistance to airflow in the upper ariway. causes fragmented sleep and daytime drousiness. no evidence of apnea on testing
what is obstructive sleep anea syndrome?
stoppage of breathing for 10s or more 5x an hour. sleep arousal. oxygen saturation in blood decreases more than 4%. chronic daytime drousiness and other symtoms.
what is hypopnea?
decrease in ariflow and desaturation by less than 4% and arousal from sleep
mild, moderate and severe OSA?
mild= 5-20/hr, moderate = 20-40/hr, and severe is >40/hr
trial evalutaion needed for what procedure?
2-3 months for the protocol of oral appliances
contraindications for oral appliances?
severe sleep apnea, obesity, TMJ problems, poor dentition, steep mandibular plane angle
