L16. Higher Functions of the Brain Pt.2 Flashcards

1
Q

Prefrontal cortex?

A

Functions (“executive functions”:
- Planning
- Decision-making and judgement
- Working memory
- Emotional/behavioural regulation

Q

Long term memory?

A
  • More permanent changes in brain function and/or structure
  • Involves long term changes in strength of specific synapses (“long term potentiation, LTP”)
  • Stored the hippocampus (mostly)

Q

Declarative memory?

A

Memory for things that can be described in words
- Episodic = recollection; snapshots of life events, experiences. Allows imagining the future
- Semantic = knowledge; words and their meanings, recognising objects names of people, faces, things, concepts - in categories

Q

Short term (working) memory?

A
  • Continued activity in brain circuits, if activity is interrupted then memory is lost
  • Involves the prefrontal cortex

Q

Prosopagnosia?

A

When you are unable to distinguish people
- Different neurons are responsible for recognising different people
- In the fusiform gyrus

Q

Face perception?

A

1 neuron per person
The body always tries to make faces out of anything from the fusiform gyrus (next to the hippocampus on the right side)

Q

Cognitive map?

A
  • In the right hippocampus
  • Recalling directions from A –> B activates neurons in the right hippocampus
  • Accurate recall leads to higher activation
  • Taxi drivers have enlarged grey matter in the right hippocampus over non-taxi drivers

Q

Language areas of the brain?

A

Broca’s area = involved in “constructing” language
Most obvious in output (fluency)

Wernicke’s area = involved in processing language “meaning”
Both input and output (comprehension)

Language functions concentrated in left hemisphere in 90% of people, including left-handers

Q

Broca’s aphasia?

A

Difficulty expressing language
Writing is equally impaired

Abnormal activity in Broca’s area in individuals who stutter

Q

Wernicke’s aphasia?

A

Difficulty comprehending language
Speech is fluent but often nonsensical

Reduced activity in Wernicke’s area in individuals with dyslexia
