L15 - Pituitary 1 Flashcards
Name the hormones produced by the hypothalamus
GNRH, SST, TRH, CRH, GnRH
Name the hormones produced by the pituitary gland
GH, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH
How is the synthesis of GH stimulated/suppressed?
GHRH stimulates
SST suppresses
negative feedback is used to regulated levels
How is the synthesis of TSH stimulated/suppressed?
TRH stimulates
negative feedback is used to regulated levels
How is the synthesis of ACTH stimulated/suppressed?
CRH stimulates
negative feedback is used to regulated levels
How is the synthesis of TSH stimulated/suppressed?
GnRH stimulates
negative feedback is used to regulated levels
List hormones produced by the ANTERIOR pituitary
- GH - growth hormone
- Prolactin
- TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
- FSH - follicle-stimulating hormone
- LH - luteinizing hormone
- ACTH - adrenocorticotropic hormone
Name the single-chain peptide hormone(s)
GH
prolactin
Name the dimeric peptide hormone(s) that share a common alpha chain
TSH
FSH
LH
Name the single chain peptides(s)

List the different preparations of gonadotropins used clinically
- Menotropins
- Urofollitropin (uFSH)
- Follitropin α & Follitropin β
- Lutropin α
- hCG
- Choriogonadotropin α (rhCG)
Describe the menotropins used clinically
- hMG –> human menopausal gonadotropins
- extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women
- mixture of FSH & LH (lower potency than the purified form of each)
Describe how Urofollitropin (uFSH)
is obtained
- FSH purified from the urine of postmenopausal women
- LH activity is removed during purification
Describe Follitropin α & Follitropin β
- preparation of gonadotropins used clinically
- Recombinant forms of FSH (identical amino acid sequence of FSH)
- Differ from each other & uFSH in carbohydrate chains
- MUCH more expensive than uFSH
Describe Lutropin α
- preparation of gonadotropins used clinically (discontinued in the US market)
- Recombinant form of LH
- Used in combination with follitropin α to stimulate follicular development in infertile women with LH deficiency
Describe how hCG is obtained
It is extracted and purified from the urine of pregnant women
Describe Choriogonadotropin α (rhCG)
- Preparation of gonadotropins used clinically
- A recombinant form of hCG
Describe the effects of PULSATILE administration of GnRH & its analogs
- GnRH stimulates production and release of LH and FSH
- Pharmacological use of GnRH and its analog mimic pulsatile secretion (IV administration every 1-4 hrs)
Describe the effects of NON-pulsatile administration of GnRH & its analogs
- Inhibits release of FSH and LH in women and men
- Causes hypogonadism
- Treats ovarian hyperstimulation, endometriosis, prostate cancer, etc
