L15: Ceramics And Glasses Flashcards
1
Q
What are inorganic materials?
And some egs?
A
Ones not mostly of carbon
SiO2
Al2O3
AlN
2
Q
What’re the 3 categories ceramics are arranged into?
A
Crystalline- regular arrangement of atoms/ions
Amorphous- irregular- longer bond lengths or distorted bond angles (glasses)
Bonded - crystalline and amorphous bonded together - clay
3
Q
What’re the properties of ceramics? Toughness? Tension? Brittleness? Compression? Hardness? Mp? Thermal conductivity? Insulators? Bonding types?
A
Toughness? Low Tension? Poor Brittleness? High Compression? Better Hardness? High Mp? High Thermal conductivity? Poor (except SiC and AlN) Insulators? Yes electrically Bonding types? Ionic/covalent
4
Q
Why do dislocations slip less easily in ceramics?
A
Dislocation contains a row of each atom as charged are opposite
They slip less easily as they have to slip past atoms of the same charge
