L14 - Spatial patterns Flashcards

1
Q

what are the three phases into which a species area relationship model is separated

A

small scale (quick growth then tapers off), linear phase in middle (species start to reoccur), steep exponential due to area being in log, completely different areas and habitats start to be coupled together

Q

how can the triphasic SAR be used to predict accumulation

A

neutral model predicts bird species accumulation well, can also be used for mainland “populations within populations”

Q

how is the SAR adjusted to fit islands and what does it tell us

A

small and connected islands have different species spatial patterns than islands that are far away and less connected, small islands mirror the first 2 phases of the triphasic model, if the area of the island is bigger it will have a higher porbability of own speciation, 2nd phase has the S = c*A^z relationship

Q

how are amphibians distributed across the world

A

most abundant in tropics, however distributed all across the world except in dry and high latitude and altitude, different strategies across (eg in temporal climated burry themselves for winter)
