ERY-THRO-POIE-SIS
why do runners get anemia? (3 reasons)
1) dietary iron deficiency
2) blood in urine
3) GI bleeding
describe pseudo-anemia
Sometimes, athletes have greater plasma volume but same amount of RBC compared to age matched peers, so it seems like athletes have lower RBC
why do some women get anemia
menstrual cycle blood loss is greater than normal -> iron deficiency -> anemia
why do athletes lose GI blood
bc of lesions
describe timing of lesions
Immediately after race, lesions are present
After about 1 week, lesions disappear
runner finishes marathon and then has a seizure - why?
1) when you run, there is delayed gastric emptying
2) you stop race and you are vaso-constricted
3) 5 min later, you get all this hypotonic solution rushing into the small intestine bc the stomach hasn’t emptied
4) the serum sodium drops -> seizure
define hypo-nat-remia
when the sodium blood level is too low
3) 5 min later, you get all this hypotonic solution rushing into the small intestine bc “”
