L12 - Anger Management Flashcards
What type of strategy is implemented for anger management?
Cognitive behaviour therapy
What are the three stages?
Cognitive preparation
Skill acquisition
Application practice
What does cognitive preparation involve?
Offender identified triggers for their anger
Reflection on past events where they became angry and decide whether their interpretation was rational
Therapist does what in cognitive preparation
Helps to redefine the situation as non-threatening
What does skill acquisition involve?
Techniques and skills are introduced to handle situations where they might get angry
They’re cognitive, behavioural, or physiological
What does application practice involve?
Offender applies skills they learnt in a monitored environment e.g. role-plays where the therapist tries to provoke the offender
If the offender acts appropriately in the role-play what does the therapist do?
Positively reinforce the offender
One positive evaluation point?
Anger management is a cognitive, behavioural, and social approach, acknowledging that offending is complex social/psychological behaviour
First negative evaluation point?
Assumption that anger causes offending is made, which may be wrong as not all crimes are motivated by anger, e.g. financial crime/Harold Shipman murdering patients because he believed he’d relieve their suffering
Second negative evaluation point?
Not all prisons have the resources to run anger management sessions, they are expensive and need highly trained specialists used to working with violent offenders
