L1.1 Fundamentals of Physiology Flashcards
what are the levels of organisation in the body?
chemicals, cells, tissues, organs, body systems, whole organism
what do you call the fluid inside and outside a cell?
extracellular fluid (outside), intracellular fluid (inside)
what maintains the composition of the ECF to keep cells alive?
the organ systems
explain the process of homeostasis
the body systems maintain homeostasis which is essential for survival of cells which make up the body systems (continues in a loop)
define homeostasis
the maintenance of relatively stable conditions inside the body (despite large changes to the external environment)
what is homeostasis controlled by?
the nervous and endocrine system
explain negative and positive feedback
negative: maintains homeostasis (when a change in body is detected, mechanisms that are set in place bring the variable back to normal)
positive: allows the body to operate outside the homeostasis range (occurs when a physiological change leads to an even greater change)
which is more common: negative or positive feedback?
negative feedback
disruptions in homeostasis leads to _____
disruptions in homeostasis leads to DISEASE
