L10: Hand Tools Flashcards
What is RMI & CTD
Repetitive Motion Injury
Cumulative Trauma Disorder (can be come permanent disability)
What are the basic causes of RMI
Excessive force
Awkward or extreme joint motions
High repetition
Duration of Work
Describe Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Compression of Ulnar nerve in elbow
Tingling and numbness
Caused by resting elbow on hard surface or sharp edge
Describe Tendinitis
Inflammation of a tendon
Symptoms are pain, burning sensation, swelling
One special case is shoulder tendinitis or bursitis at the rotator cuff
Describe Tenosynovitis
Special case of De Quervain’s Disease occur due to forceful gripping and twisting of a hand, using a screw driver
Guidelines for hand posture
Avoid 90* wrist rotation
Keep finger pinches less than 10N
Keep forces low during rotation or flexion of wrist
Guidelines for handtools
Cylindrical grips should not exceed 5cm
Avoid gripping that spreads the fingers more than 6cm
Use hand tools that make it possible to maintain neutral position
Guidelines for workstation design
Keep the work surface low to permit the operator to work with elbows to the side and wrists in a neutral position
Guidelines for Process Engineering
Allow machinery to do repetitive tasks and leave variable tasks to human operators
Provide jigs to support workload
Allow works to work on their own pace
Guidelines for Product Design
Minimize # of loose parts like screws
Minimize force required for screws
Design product with large parts to permit gripping with fingers.
3 requirements of a tool?
Fit the task
Fit the user and hand
Not create injuries
