L10-11 - Radial Compressors Flashcards
What is a radial compressor?
When the flow enters axially and is given both radial and tangential velocity before being slowed by a diffuser.
How can the mass flow of a radial compressor be increased?
Doubling up - back to back
Where are radial compressors used?
In low volume flows (<10MW) turbo shaft and turbo prop.
What is torque?
Change of angular momentum of flow.
How do you calculate the torque applied to flow?
(Cw2r2)-(Cw1r1)
What is the equation for work done and power?
Work = Torque * angular speed Power = Work * mass flow
What is the formula used to work put the impeller outlet swirl velocity?
Stanitz estimate to work out slip factor.
How do you find the isentropic efficiency across impeller?
Divide the loss equally between impeller and diffuser.
What is the purpose of the diffuser?
To slow down flow to recover as much static pressure from stagnation pressure without too much loss.
