L1 Work organization in surgical department Flashcards
Main goals in organization and what to consider
Patient safety & work efficiency
Consider:
Different restriction levels
Number & layout of rooms
Traffic patterns
Ventilation
Staff qualifications
Adequate spaces
Caseload
Different restriction levels
Restricted, semirestricted & unrestricted
Biosecurity
A set of measures to prevent introduction and spread of infectious diseases
Clothing requirements for semirestricted & restricted areas
Scrub suit
Hair covering
Mask
Clean shoes / coverings
Clothing requirement for unrestricted area
Scrub suit
What are restricted areas (3)
Operating rooms, sterile supply rooms, scrubs sink area
What are semirestricted areas (5)
Nurse’s workstation
Hallways between operating rooms
Instrument and supply processing area
Storage
Utility rooms
Traffic pattern regulations (5)
- Unrestricted => semirestricted => restricted => unrestricted (cycle)
- Operating rooms limited only to essential personnel & equipment
- Traffic in & out of rooms minimized - movement of airborne contaminants ↓
- Positive air pressure (airflow from cleanest to least clean areas)
- Movement of contaminated & sterile equipment separated
Requirements for operating room (7)
- Large enough for essential equipment and personnel
- Only necessary equipment
- Adjustable surgical table (warming if possible)
- Soft, white light with regulated intensity, no heating, 360° rotation
- Ventilation, optimal airflow
- 17-20℃ & humidity < 50%
- Easy cleanable surfaces (resistant to corrosive effect)
Lightning requirements for operating room
Soft, white light with regulated intensity, no heating effect, 360° rotation
Requirements for scrub sink area 3
- Centrally located
- Motion sensitive / foot pedal
- Antiseptic soap, scrub brushes, fingernail cleaners
Requirements for gowning & gloving area
Separate from scrub & sink area, can be inside operating room
Requirements for nurse’s workstation & instrument and supply processing area (5)
- Centrally located in the surgical area
- Cleaning, sterilization of instruments
- Surgery log, surgery anesthesia protocols
- Autoclave, refrigerator, blanket warmer, formalin containers…
- Divided into 2 separate areas to prevent cross-contamination
(storage can be combined here)
Requirements for anesthesia and patient preparation room (3)
- Necessary equipment & drugs
- Transportable crash cart
- 17-20℃ & humidity <50%
Minor (septic) procedures operating room
It is separate room adjacent to the anesthesia preparation area. Minor contaminated surgical procedures done here. Equipments:
- Operating table
- Spotlight
- Gas, suction lines
- Suture materials, instrument packs
- Antiseptic preparation materials
