What is quantitative research?
Research methods that draw data from numbers and statistics.
What is qualitative research?
Research methods that focus on the inner personal experience through interview/observation techniques.
What is empiricism?
The idea that knowledge is best gained through sensory experience.
What is a Theory?
A specific set of assumptions and principles about a broad phenomenon.
What is a Hypotheses?
A generalized statement that provides an educated and testable prediction about a theory.
What does falsifiability mean?
That it is possible to design a further study that proves/disproves the claim you have made in your study.
What is the induction method?
The process of starting with a real-life observation and inferring a general rule/conclusion from it.
What is the deduction method?
Applying a set of general principles to specific situations to draw logical conclusions from.
What is Positivism?
A scientific approach that involves using quantitative methods to study social phenomena.
What is Interpretivism?
A scientific approach using qualitative methods to analyze an action/even based on the beliefs, norms, values and cultures of society.
What is epistomology?
The theory of knowledge - how it is gathered and from which sources.
What is the data theory cycle?
1) think of questions about the topic of interest
2) formulate hypotheses
3) develop testable predictions
4) gather data to test predictions and evaluate
5) EITHER alter or reject hypotheses (revert back to step 2) OR Develop general theories
6) Think of questions that further your theory, repeat process
